CONSTRUCTION OF PAVEMENTS ON UNIVERSITY OF GHANA CAMPUS

University of Ghana (UG) is the eye of the country Ghana and as such, needs selfless leaders who can drive real development that will steer it towards the direction of achieving its’ goal of being counted among the best universities in the world and not just Africa.

It is worthy to mention that there indeed has been no shortage of visionary leaders; a remarkable leader amongst them being Prof. Ernest Aryeetey who has so far salvage the image of the university and once again made it great. The testimony of his achievements lies in the placement of the university in the 7^th position in the recent ranking of Quality Universities in Africa.

People who have known this university in the past and how it was will attest to the fact that the university has gone high in terms of research, infrastructural development and overall fame in the international community. Even though I have limited knowledge about all the achievements of the university, I am proud and overwhelmed with joy over the few I have come to know of as a student of a noble institution like University of Ghana. Credit must always be awarded to deserving leaders for their transformations in the development of the university. 

This article focused on only one developmental aspect of the university, that is the pavements that have been constructed all over the campus and streets to ease pedestrians walk. This did not only beautify the university campus but has also enabled students to walk freely and safely on campus without the threat of being knocked down/ run over by motorists. To me, this is a significant achievement and I say kudos to Prof Ernest Aryeetey, the Vice Chancellor of University of Ghana whose hard work and vision has brought this university this far. In deed “cola nuts last longer in the mouths of those who value it”. I write to appreciate and to express our joy of the positive progressions you have brought us.

Nonetheless, we would like to bring to the notice of the management of the university that the construction of the said pavements, the needs of the Special Needs members of the university were sadly not taken into consideration, likewise that of cyclists.

The pavements have gutters which are uncovered and edges which have not been properly lowered. This situation is life threatening to all members of the university community and mostly to the members of the Special Needs.  It is often said that, when “you kill a snake, you must cut-off the head” which connotes a successful work done. As the university has set out to do a good work, it should do it diligently and well enough to support all.

When the university addresses these concerns in consideration of minority concerns especially persons with disabilities (PWDs), it would contribute to the enhancement of the university aim of becoming a world-class university. We strongly believe that the university management will take urgent step in designing and implementing disability friendly structures in the construction of pavements. This will create a very conducive commuting system in the university that would be accessible to all calibre of people that walk and ride on campus.

This I believe would contribute to the enhancement of the university’s image locally and internationally.
